The PC guy should switch, already

Filed under ad, apple, get a mac, switch.

Apple’s “Get a Mac” ads are generally pretty entertaining and sometimes even reminiscent of the truth. Although the recent jabs at Vista are a bit childish. Vista runs admirably on my MacBook, and honestly, I’d never choose to run XP instead. But I think Steven Leigh put it best when he said “Can you imagine shopping for a car and having the salesman only talk about what’s wrong with the competition’s cars?”

Here is my suggestion to Apple – have the PC guy switch to a Mac. Just picture it…

PC guy is dressed a bit like Mac guy, not quite as casual, not quite as stuffy as usual.

Mac guy asks “Hey PC, what’s with the new threads?”

PC guy responds “These? Oh nothing, just trying something new.”

Mac guy “I kind of liked you in the suit, PC.”

PC guy “Well OK. I switched to a Mac.”

Mac guy “Really PC? That’s great!”

PC guy “I know. I didn’t really switch. You see, my Mac runs Windows so when I’m around my PC friends I fit right in.”

Mac guy nods

PC guy “And when I’m with you, we can do all the cool Mac stuff.”

The idea is to show Windows users that they can switch to a Mac without leaving Windows behind. I’m sure Apple already has this idea, but I just wanted to encourage them to go ahead with it.

You don’t get it — he’s not a PC guy, he’s a PC, personified. He can’t “switch” because he *is* a PC.

The only problem is that the “PC guy” you mention is actually a PC, not a PC user.

He could however have an “operation” and become a Mac, then wear PC clothes that have the designer label “Boot Camp” or “Parallels” or some such, then do an instant costume change…

I love your commercial idea, as it really would drive the idea home that with a Mac people could have both worlds.

The only problem with the idea is that in the “Get a Mac” commercials, the characters are not “PC guy” and “Mac guy”, they are supposed to be an actual PC computer and Mac computer. So the only way your commercial would work is if the PC were running an x86-hacked copy of Leopard. Even though we know it has been done (and instructions put out on the web) within a day or two of Leopard’s release, we all know about Apple’s steadfast refusal to allow this.

So I learned two things. I should turn off comment moderation and the PC guy is not a guy using a PC but a PC itself… my dialog will need a little reworking, but I think the idea is still solid.

No, the idea is not. PC can’t turn into a Mac. It would make the commercial pointless. You have to show what the Mac is delivering you from.
